New Folding Phone Goes to Extreme

In an effort to become relevant again, the NoKidding™ corporation has unveiled a new folding mobile phone. Unlike other devices that bend neatly down the middle, the new model, labeled the Accordicator Pro, folds in 27 separate segments, in what insiders claim is “26 more times than anyone ever asked for.”

Rejecting rumors that the fold count surpasses the number of decisions made during its development, Lead designer, Dr. Harmon Réed-Shamson, explains that the secret of the new device is in its Adaptive Hinge Array (AHA), that allows the OLED screen to fold without cracking. As a side effect, air-gap chambers between the hinges produce a faint musical hum when extended.

Powering the Accordicator Pro is a distributed battery system, with each of the device’s 27 folds housing its own independent cell. NoKidding™ asserts that this approach eliminates single point of failure, though it also requires each section to be charged separately.

Since each of the Accordicator Pro’s segments is capable of running a separate app, the maker was forced to invent a new, overly narrow aspect ratio known as NoodleView, claiming that traditional apps “think too horizontally.” According to Réed-Shamson, several new apps already embraced this ratio, including ThreadBare™, a chat app that displays one word per segment (see below), and UnderCurrent™, where each display segment shows the weather for a different hour of the day.

Thanks to the device’s geometry, the camera placement changes constantly. The company’s VP of Imaging, Pola Focus, explained: “Sometimes the camera is in the front. Sometimes it’s in the back. Sometimes it’s folded inside the phone and photographing its own circuits. We call this ‘creative mode.’”

While analysts remain divided on whether the Accordicator Pro solves any real problems, early adopters have already begun praising its rethinking of how screen real estate is allocated, noting that it closely mirrors modern housing trends. However, many of them expressed surprise upon learning that each of the battery charging ports uses a different connector type, requiring users to purchase 27 separate charging cables.

Meanwhile, NoKidding™ confirmed a software update is planned to address reports that the device’s folds occasionally reshuffle themselves during sleep.
